Ziggurat Retained by Extell Development to Support Design & Construction

Extell Development retained Ziggurat to provide 3D MEP coordination for its residential development at 70 Charlton Street in Hudson Square, with the project adopting a two-tower configuration. The development consists of two 21-story buildings. The larger building will face Charlton Street and house 72 units, with a smaller 44-unit building facing Vandam Street. The project, designed by architects Beyer Blinder Belle, is slated for completion in 2016.

Initially Ziggurat worked closely with the Architects and Engineers to convert the 2D plans to 3D models and run clash detection so critical areas can be checked for design clashes and maintain required ceilings’ heights. This will enable the team to start construction and shop drawings phase with clash free design. Moving forward, Ziggurat works closely with the GC and Sub-contractors to perform 3D clash detection analysis during shop drawings coordination so any clashes created during the shop drawings phase will be resolved during MEP coordination before they get to the field.

Ziggurat has been working with Extell on multiple projects over the years.

Visualizing the MTA East Side Access Revit Model on a Browser

How would you like to view and share Revit (or any 3D) model in a web browser? We provide a visualization solution that is simple, cost effective and does not require installing and learning expensive software.

Earlier this year we started offering a new, proprietary solution that allows our clients to post, collaborate and share their 3D models using any web browser. We are now working with Michels Corporation, an industry-leading utility contractor - on their bidding process for the New York’s MTA’s East Side Access project, one of the largest transportation infrastructure projects currently underway in the United States.

Ziggurat was retained by Michels to take the Revit model that was part of the bidding package, upload it onto our servers so the 3D model can be shared with other parties who collaborate on the bidding process, and also provide an amazing platform that clearly outlines the multiple construction stages envisioned by Michels. Our collaboration platform enabled the bidder to communicate their intent better than any written document or expensive video.

Ziggurat on a project listed in the WSJ's "The Best Architecture of 2014"

The renovation and expansion project at the Sterling and Francine Clark near Williams College, MA was listed by the Wall Street Journal as one of 2014 Best Architecture. You can read more HERE

Ziggurat joined the team during early design phase to convert all architectural, structural and MEP 2D plans to 3D models utilizing Ziggurat’s plug-in for AutoCAD and Navisworks.

Review of the 3D models helped identify major design issues including insufficient plenum height to accommodate MEP systems, conflicts  with concrete joists and mismatches between architectural, structural and MEP designs such as stairs, slabs, walls and opening shown on different location for each discipline.

These issues were resolved during Construction Documents stage and Ziggurat submitted a 100% CD clash free 3D model that was submitted to the subs for construction.

In 2001, a master plan developed by Cooper, Robertson & Partners dramatically re-conceived the Clark campus. Pritzker Prize-winning architect Tadao Ando and landscape architects Reed Hilderbrand Associates were selected. In summer 2010 work began on the infrastructure for the next phase of the project, the construction and renovation of the main campus buildings and grounds.

Ziggurat utilizes Bentley Systems on MTA project with Jacobs Engineering

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority is North America's largest transportation network, serving a population of 15.1 million people in the 5,000-square-mile area fanning out from New York City through Long Island, southeastern New York State, and Connecticut.

Ziggurat was retained by Jacobs Engineering to provide BIM support services on the new ventilation plant to be built at the West Village's Mulry Square. The exterior of the plant, to be constructed at the intersection of Greenwich Avenue and Seventh Avenue South, is designed to blend in with the surrounding historic district-protected neighborhood, complete with a brick facade and windows.

Ziggurat team was tasked with converting the subcontractors’ 2D shop drawings to 3D model using Bentley Systems, the choice platform for all MTA work. Once the 2D drawings were converted to 3D models our team performed clash detection, 3D visualization and model analyses utilizing Bentley’s Projectwise platform.

News from FIFA world cup - Ziggurat 3D technology was used during the planning of Arena de São Paulo

The Arena Corinthians is a sports stadium located in São Paulo, Brazil and owned, operated, and used by Sport Club Corinthians Paulista. It has a seating capacity of 48,234, making it the fifth-largest stadium used by teams in the top tier of the Brazilian League and the eleventh-largest in Brazil.

During the 2014 FIFA World Cup, the stadium is known as Arena de São Paulo. It will host six matches, including the opening match on 12 June 2014.


Our partner in Brazil, MBM Servicos de Engenharia were retained to assist in early MEP coordination by converting the 2D AutoCAD drawings into 3D models that were further analysed for clash detection.

Ziggurat supports 3D BIM coordination at Princeton's Firestone Library renovation

We are very excited about a project we recently started working on. We were retained by one of the sub contractors to develop and coordinate their shop drawings in 3D and comply and fulfill the 3D BIM requirements on this project.

Princeton University is moving forward with plans for a complete renovation of Firestone Library. The planning is focused on creating a building that is well-suited to support modern library services while also providing the proper environment for one of the world's great book and manuscript collections.

Few of the sustainability features include: Energy-efficient HVAC system including chilled beams and heat recovery systems, Energy-efficient lighting including automatic controls and energy efficient lamps and ballasts, Replaced skylight glazing to reduce heat loss. New UV filtered and insulated windows are also being installed and Low-flow plumbing fixtures to reduce water consumption.

The renovation and reconfiguration is conceived as a long-term phased project taking more than 10 years, during which the library will remain open and occupied.

Ziggurat provides 3D modeling and coordination for "Culinary Institute of America" expansion project

The Culinary Institute of America (CIA) is a culinary college located in Hyde Park (Dutchess County, New York) USA, founded in 1946. The CIA has branch campuses in St. Helena, California, and San Antonio, Texas, as well as a campus in Singapore.

Kirchhoff-Consigli Construction Management (KCCM), the CM on the expansion project retained Ziggurat to convert to 3D Revit models all construction documents that were developed in 2D so the team can perform “walkthroughs” to review the design and insert MEP systems in 3D to perform clash detection and coordination. Performing 3D clash detection analysis was critical for this job, as it includes expansion of existing building and connecting new MEP and architectural systems to existing buildings.

Ziggurat provides 3D modeling and coordination for Battery Maritime Building, a 127-year-old NYC landmark en route to its future incarnation

The Battery Maritime Building is a ferry terminal at 10 South Street at the corner of South and Whitehall Streets near South Ferry at the tip of Manhattan. It is used since 1956, as the ferry terminal to Governors Island. Between 2001 and 2005, in a 36 million dollar renovation, the exterior of the building and its deteriorating wooden piers were restored and its exterior repainted in its original multiple color schemes by Jan Hird Pokorny Architects.

Our client, the Dermot Company plans to top the historic ferry terminal with a new glass hotel and restaurant and refurbish the building’s Great Hall for public and private use.

The challenges in this project are the intricate land mark’s existing conditions that need to remain and be tied into the new structures. The plans for the new structures were designed in 2D CAD and the developer retained Ziggurat to convert the plans to 3D models for MEP coordination with existing conditions. After point cloud scanning the existing structures and converting these scans into a Revit model, our team proceeded with enabling 3D MEP coordination with the BIM that was converted from 2D to 3D using Ziggurat plugin for AutoCAD and Navisworks. By doing so, project MEP coordination was continually utilizing Navisworks for clash detection between new plans and existing conditions for high level accuracy.

The images below take you through the path of creating a Revit file from point cloud scan of existing conditions, converting 2D CAD MEP plans to 3D BIM with Ziggurat plug in, and running clash detection between new MEP plans and exiting conditions.
